NYS PTA Unit Insurance Rates Will Change for 2016-17

The rates for unit’s PTA insurance premium of $235 per building have not increased in the past eight years. Meanwhile, the cost of the insurance program has increased to the point that the premiums collected are not fully covering the costs.
In November, the Board of Directors approved a three-year rate increase structure. Starting in the 2016-17 school year, the insurance program rates will be restructured and increase slightly.
The cost of the insurance will be $75 for the base unit insurance plus $200 per building for the liability insurance, or $275 for units with only one building. Units with two buildings will have a premium of $75 plus $400, or $475.
The other change is that SEPTAs and SEPTSAs will only be charged a flat rate of $100, instead of the previous $235. This change was made because most SEPTAs are in buildings already covered by other units.
Late fees will remain the same – $20 per building. These changes will take effect with the bills units will receive in April 2016. See the table below for the planned rate structure.

20 Tips to Encourage Reading With Your Child

As parents you are encouraged to read at least 15 minutes every day with your child. Here are some tips to help you become successful at reading together while making it an enjoyable experience for you and your child.
Click here to view the list (beginning on page 22) or visit www.nyspta.org – under Your PTA – Pick A Reading Partner – PARP Toolkit (Section 5). In the PARP Toolkit you will find a lot of resources to help you as a parent.
If you are a PARP Chair, the Toolkit is a terrific source of information. Sections 1-4 give examples of how to run a PARP program at your school. Section 5 includes a list of different resources for all to use.

Prepare for Cold and Flu Season

With the milder than usual weather, you may not be thinking about cold and flu season. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu season is just getting started in the US.
If you have not yet received your flu shot, it is not too late to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends a yearly flu shot for everyone six months and older.
Unfortunately, some of us will go to our doctor’s office this season and get a flu diagnosis. Please always remember to STAY AT HOME and rest if you do! Flu is very contagious and easily spread.

The PARP Application for the 2016 Pick A Reading Partner Award is now available. Click here for details or visit www.nyspta.org.
If you hosted a PARP program this year, enter it for a PARP Award. Each region selects one winner and then NYS PTA selects one winner from that group as the 2016 NYS PTA PARP Winner, which will be recognized at the 2016 State Convention.
All applications must be postmarked by June 15, 2016 and sent to your Region Director. Any questions, contact your Region PARP Chair or email parp@nyspta.org.
